"EARLY WARNING"

"The Alban Hills near Frascati, a few miles south-east of Rome, are showing signs of life. Dormant for 20,000 years, the volcanoes in the area are steadily pushing up the ground "like a sponge-cake" says the Italian National Institute of Geophysics. The area has risen by 18 ins this century, but two thirds of this has occurred in the past 15 years. Though declaring there is no immediate danger of an eruption, the institute is watching closely, for the area is large and densely-populated..."
