Habsburgs may return to Austrian rule

Members of the Habsburg dynasty may come to rule Austria again.

The country’s parliament has abolished one of the provisions of the election law which was adopted after the First World War.

The law stripped members of the royal houses of the right to run for head of state.

One of the Habsburg descendants, Ulrich Habsburg, narrowly escaped a scandal after nominating his candidacy for presidency in last year’s elections.

Ulrich Habsburg failed to collect the required number of voter signatures in order to get registered as a candidate.

The House of Habsburg reigned in Austria from 1282 to 1918.
